Advertising assessment: Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

Needs to be more time spent on the big last question 3.

2) Read the whole mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Monochrome (black and white) – stylish, sophisticated, reinforces traditional heterosexual
meanings; consistent with aspirational branding. Low-key lighting, ‘chiaroscuro’, backlighting

visible in shot – suggests stage lights/spotlights, fashion show? This is a point i could of expanded on the first question. Armani advert arguably reflects the ‘crisis of masculinity’ some refer to – assertively
heterosexual, perhaps reflecting the struggle men face to find their place/role in the 21 st
century. Armani captures the way men wish to see the world. This is fir the seocned one as i did not expand on this. Some online reaction to Maybelline ‘That Boss Life’ campaign was openly hostile or abusive
(“Dads, this is why you need to raise your sons” – implying strong masculine role models are
required to prevent men becoming emasculated). Lastly on the big question i could of talked about the boss life advert more.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?

3 or 4

4) Look at your answer and the mark scheme for Question 1. What aspect of technical film language (camerawork, mise-en-scene etc.) or advertising persuasive techniques do you need to revise to improve your response to this kind of question in future?

Look over more on mise en scene and look out for more on whats on the scene and whats being repersented on the cover so i have more to talk about and expand on.

5) Look at your answer and the mark scheme for Question 2. What aspects of the cultural and historical context for the Score hair cream advert do you need to revise or develop in future?

Even though i did go over the representation of women i think i still need to read more about it and in the exam gone into more detail about it.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on David Gauntlett and masculinity 'in crisis'. Write a completely new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples/textual analysis from the Advertising CSPs.

It could be argued both sides that the idea of masculinity being in crisis and whether it is or not. Example of this is the traditional masculine jobs due to the economy changing, jobs like manual labour have been replaced with jobs that need qualities such as communication and intelligence which some consider to be "soft skills". On the other hand, it can be argued that masculinity is not in crisis due to things such as the Lynx brand re-positioning its advertising campaigns away from sexist, objectified representations of women to more of a male empowerment message (‘Find Your Magic’campaign).

2) Select your chosen magazine to create a new edition for and explain the thinking behind your choice.

I am choosing XXL mainly because it is something i am interested in and what i like. Also i like the idea and colour scheme of it.

3) Find three different front covers for your chosen magazine and embed them in your blogpost. Analyse the fonts, colours and typical design. What is the language or writing style? How are the cover lines presented? You need to become an expert in the design and construction of this magazine and its branding.
